Rysheema Dixon’s great work as a Political Leader, Community Activist, Educator, and Social Entrepreneur has received continuous support from her fellow Public Allies members, and a strong connection nationally with the Young Elected Officials. Rysheema J. Dixon is the first and youngest black woman currently serving as City Councilwoman At- Large for 2 consecutive terms in the City of Wilmington, DE.
Ms. Dixon, originally from Philadelphia, now located in Wilmington, Delaware has made great strides in the Delaware Valley Region that has gained her national attention. Rysheema Dixon is the CEO and Founder of RD Innovative Planning, a community development strategic planning company that’s sparking interest and conversations around the country. Ms. Dixon’s objective is to create an experience of opportunity and inclusion for the youth and families living in the underserved areas in the inner city. Her programs Pathways To Apprenticeship and Play Streets Wilmington has also caught the attention of many community leaders and partners. Delaware Pathways to Apprenticeship functions under the auspice of L.E.E.P (Labor, Economic, Education, Empowerment) which is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to end intergenerational poverty by providing access to opportunities for transformational apprenticeships in the building trades that lead to solid middle-class careers. This program has recruited, trained, and mentored people from lowincome communities-including, but not limited to, the formerly incarcerated, people on public assistance, and people who live in public housing -to be accepted into and succeed in construction union apprentice programs in Delaware.
Ms. Dixon’s program has changed lives, one class at a time. Since March 2019, they have graduated 53 participants to date and working on Class 7. This program can be expanded into any major City and different cities have reached out regarding having P2A in their city and they look forward to following up on those inquires to help alleviate poverty across America.
The program Play Streets Wilmington which also involves other non-profit and community partners promotes recreational and healthier lifestyles for children and their families during nightly events held periodically now throughout the summer. Play Streets Wilmington also seeks to improve community engagement with police and other government offices throughout the City. During the nightly Play Streets Wilmington summer events in City neighborhoods, local streets are closed to vehicular traffic so fun, healthy, and educational activities can be held.
