Black Girl Magic Museum Is Bringing The Culture To Dallas

The Black Girl Magic Museum is an interactive, educational based pop-up museum. The Museum will consist of paintings, Props, Murals, literature, and much more. The Black Girl Museum is for everyone; however, they are using the space to highlight the brilliance of black women and girls and show the representation that is much needed.

“Growing up in a beautifully blended family in the deep south where black aesthetics were not embraced and colorism ran rampant within our community, my sister and I struggled to define beauty as we faced different competing definitions of it,” says creator, Dominique McKenzie. “This struggle followed us through adulthood and continues to afflict many young women and girls presently. Due to our limited representation or often stereotypical representation, it’s not well known that many young black women fight a silent battle of low confidence and self-esteem due to not being seen. This unique set of circumstances have created a need in the community that the museum fills. After visiting two interactive museums, we were inspired to create an exhibit that would be both fun and educational. A platform that spotlights the beauty and intelligence of black women.”

THE IMPACT

Whenever black girls and women visit our museum we want them to leave with a sense of pride, confidence and realize their divine purpose and destiny. BGMM is shining a light on all the wonderful contributions of black women who’ve had a meaningful impact, whose shoulders we stand on, as well as the many successful black women breaking down barriers today. Our hope is that black women and girls realize that they are MORE than what the media portrays. To see representation in every form, from our hair and names to our melanin in every hue- we are black girl magic. I want everyone who visits BGMM to know we are so much more than meets the eye. Even if only one girl is impacted by the museum our job is done.
