Black Women Didn’t Just Make History: They Changed Daytime Television

For 35 years, daytime television did not produce a new soap opera centered on a primarily Black cast. In February 2025, that changed; Beyond The Gates premiered on CBS as the first new daytime soap opera on a major broadcast network in 25 years, and the first centered on a primarily Black cast in more than three decades.

One year later, it has received 15 Daytime Emmy nominations, second only to The Young and the Restless, a series that has been on the air for more than 50 years.

Created by acclaimed showrunner, head writer, and executive producer Michele Val Jean, with executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, Beyond the Gates follows the Dupree family, an affluent Black family living in the fictional gated community of Fairmont Crest. The series does something daytime television had refused to do for decades: place Black family, Black wealth, Black relationships, and Black life at the center of the story, not the margins.

Among its historic nominations are Tamara Tunie and Karla Mosley, marking the first time in the Daytime Emmy Awards’ 53-year history that two Black actresses have been nominated in the Lead Actress category in the same year. Both are first-time Daytime Emmy nominees despite decades of work in daytime television.

The industry knew who they were, the awards simply hadn’t recognized them, that changed because someone built something that didn’t exist before. This is what happens when Black creators are given the infrastructure to tell Black stories, not as a special initiative, but as part of the industry’s future.

Fifteen nominations in its first year isn’t just recognition. It’s evidence that when opportunity expands, excellence follows.

This isn’t simply entertainment news,it’s another example of what becomes possible when Black people are trusted to build.
