Community Is How We Change The Future: Utah Foster Care And IMPACT Magazine Launch Initiative To Strengthen Support For Black Children And Families

When communities gather with intention, they do more than share a meal, they create the conditions for change.

Recognizing the need for more Black foster families in Utah, Utah Foster Care has partnered with IMPACT Magazine to host the Black Family Community Cookout, a free community experience designed to celebrate Black families while opening the door to meaningful conversations about foster care, community support, and cultural connection.

For nearly two decades, IMPACT Magazine has believed that journalism should do more than report the news, it should bring people together around solutions. This partnership reflects that mission by creating a space where families can connect, ask questions, build relationships, and discover how they can make an IMPACT in the lives of children.

“At IMPACT Magazine, we don’t simply tell stories, we build ecosystems around the issues that matter,” said Tunisha Brown, Founder and Publisher of IMPACT Magazine. “The conversation around foster care shouldn’t begin when a child enters the system. It should begin within the community. This cookout is about strengthening relationships, celebrating our culture, and reminding people that lasting change starts with all of us.”

Although foster families from every background are needed, Black children continue to benefit from opportunities to remain connected to their culture, traditions, and community whenever possible. The Black Family Community Cookout was created to increase awareness while making the conversation approachable and welcoming for everyone.

Current foster parent Esther Jackson-Stowell understands the importance of that support firsthand.

“Walking this path means embracing a journey filled with immense beauty, quiet heartbreaks, and unmatched resilience… We quickly realized that our family’s strength was directly tied to the community standing beside us.”

Utah Foster Care CEO Nikki MacKay echoed that vision.

“We want this event to be a celebration first. People often think they have to know everything about foster care before attending an event like this. That’s not the case. We simply want people to come, enjoy the afternoon, connect with neighbors, and learn how every member of the community can make a difference.”

Guests will enjoy complimentary BBQ from Miss Essie’s, music, games, family activities, community resources, and opportunities to connect with current foster families in an environment centered on education, celebration, and belonging.

This partnership with the Utah Foster Care represents another step in IMPACT Magazine’s commitment to moving beyond awareness and creating experiences that inspire action.
