Dreamgirls Shines Bright at Salt Lake City’s Grand Theatre

Step inside the Grand Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah and you’ll feel it before the curtain even rises: a rumble in the chest, a pull in the heart. It’s the anticipation of a story that doesn’t just entertain but sings directly to the soul.

Running now through June 14th, Dreamgirls isn’t just a stage play, it’s a celebration, a confrontation, and a homecoming all wrapped in one electrifying performance. Under the visionary direction of Latoya Cameron, with musical direction by the powerhouse duo Dee-Dee Darby-Duffin and Jonathan McDonald, and movement masterfully choreographed by Natosha Washington, this production is pure brilliance from overture to final bow.

At the heart of Dreamgirls are three young Black women, voices like velvet and grit, who rise from back alley gigs to the blazing lights of national fame. But as with every glittering dream, there is a price. Love is tested. Ambitions collide. Trust is broken. And the very bond that made them unstoppable begins to fray under the pressure of fame and the pull of individual desire.

Yet this story isn’t just theirs, it’s ours. It’s the story of a sound born in Black communities, grown in church pews and smoky clubs, nurtured in resistance, and then packaged and sold to White America. It is the story of Motown, of rhythm, of resilience. Of how our music has always been more than just melody, it’s been a mirror, a weapon, a balm.

This production doesn’t shy away from the truth. It leans into it, unapologetically. And in doing so, it gives us what live theatre is meant to offer: reflection, connection, and yes, a little glitter and gold.

If you’ve ever hummed along to a soul record, if you’ve ever dared to chase a dream, or if you simply need to be reminded of the beauty that can rise from struggle, Dreamgirls is the show you need to see.

Make your way to the Grand Theatre before June 14th. Come for the music. Stay for the story. Leave changed.
