Every generation produces a few rare voices; truth-tellers whose presence challenges injustice, whose research shifts paradigms, and whose lives spark movements. Dr. William A. Smith is one such voice. At the 2025 Men of IMPACT Honorary Black-Tie Gala, IMPACT Magazine is proud to honor Dr. Smith, a visionary scholar, a tireless advocate for mental health justice, and the very definition of transformative leadership.
With a presence as grounded as his scholarship is expansive, Dr. Smith holds the title of Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah, a place where he’s not only built programs but broken barriers. His academic reach is as multi-dimensional as the communities he serves: spanning Psychiatry, Education, Culture & Society, and African American Studies. He currently leads as the Chief Executive Administrator for Strategic Initiatives and Mental Health Justice at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, where his work goes far beyond academia. There, he leads a movement, anchored in his national Love Your Mind campaign, pushing the mental wellness conversation into diverse communities too often left at the margins.
But Dr. Smith’s legacy can be distilled into a single, revolutionary concept: Racial Battle Fatigue. Coined by him in 2003, this term isn’t just theory, it’s lived experience, now backed by decades of research and cited across the globe. Racial Battle Fatigue defines the chronic psychological and physiological strain exacted by racism, a toll so many endure in silence. Dr. Smith gave it a name. He gave it language. And in doing so, he gave millions a way to be seen, heard, and, most importantly, healed.

His scholarship is nothing short of prolific. Whether in the Harvard Educational Review, the American Educational Research Journal, or The Journal of Negro Education, Dr. Smith’s writings have ignited conversations and informed policies. His co-edited work, The Racial Crisis in American Higher Education, now in its third edition, continues to be a definitive text for those striving to dismantle systemic racism in academic institutions.
And while many scholars remain within the ivory tower, Dr. Smith steps boldly into courtrooms, lecture halls, and boardrooms. Over the past two years alone, he has delivered more than 150 presentations and interviews, speaking truth to power before justices of the Utah Supreme Court, faculty at Ivy League medical colleges, and executives of Fortune 500 companies.

Recognized as one of the World’s Top 2% of Scientists from 2022 through 2024, and ranked among the Top 1% of U.S. research professors in the Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings, Dr. Smith’s work is more than respected, it’s revered. His honors, from the AERA Distinguished Career Contribution Award to the prestigious title of AERA Fellow, mark not only achievement but ascension, into the ranks of the world’s most influential thinkers.
Mentor. Scholar. Revolutionary. Dr. William A. Smith has given the world not just knowledge, but wisdom; not just research, but revelation. His life’s work calls us to do better, to dig deeper, and to love harder; ourselves, each other, and our minds.
