Dr. Teshia Koffi Created A Company To Ensure Organizations Produce Tangible Results Around Equity, Diversity, And Inclusion

The best moment of my life was when my Dad asked me for a cane. “Teshia, can you buy me a cane? My knees have been hurting pretty bad and I’m having trouble walking. Can you get me a cane?” This simple request brought me the most joy I ever felt in life because now I had the opportunity to care for my father.

Thus, I proceeded to bombard him with questions about his future cane, “So, do you want a wooden cane? Curved? Any particular color? I can have your name engraved in it! Do you want it to be foldable and retractable? How about one of those mac-daddy canes? For real… I think you could pull it off…” My dad, an Army vet, died only a few months after receiving his cane, but I consider it both an honor and privilege to have had the opportunity to watch him grow old. He socialized me to be earnest, strong, punctual, honest, and since I was a quiet kid – have my actions speak louder than my words.

This is the rock upon which I define my company – action, accountability, outcomes. I founded Capacity-Consulting and Development (CCD) because there is an obvious demarcation between Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion commitments and how they manifest within the innerworkings of an organization. As an organization development company that is inquiry-based, systems-oriented, research-informed, outcome-driven, and humanistic, we mitigate this issue by implementing and/or improving organizational systems to better achieve goals and outcomes. In other words, we ensure EDI commitments become operative throughout organizational structures, processes, polices, procedures, and workplace norms. Capacity Consulting and Development is all about results.

As a scholar-practitioner, it’s easy to see that I’m not in the business of “educating people to death” because at some point, knowledge should become behavior. Instead, I choose to deliver on the transformation of organizational structures and systems. Like the example my Dad set long ago, I strive to leave a positive impact of my existence wherever I go, whether it be through relationships, research, professional practice, or CCD. Actions will always speak louder than words.
